When it comes to repairing your roof, NO ONE can touch Ron William's "Roof Doctor". 

 We do lots of shake roof repairs.  We were recently called out to do repairs on a shake roof that had just been "repaired" the previous year.

When we arrived it was obvious why the previous repairs had failed. Below left are the "shims" the Contractor had used.

To save money and make the shims easier to install, they took regular shims and split them into slivers. Because they are so small, as soon as they dry a little, they shrink and fall out. Below right are our minimum width shims.

Unfortunately for consumers, roof repair work is sorely lacking in regulatory standards and consumers are left at the mercy of the repair person's ethics and experience.

We have found that many companies that represent themselves as professionals, are not aware of basic Roofing Industry Standards and do not have ANY or very limited experience in actual roof installation. A good example would be the shims in the picture above left. They are way too small to comply with even the minimum coverage requirements set forth by The Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau.  (See line 4 - Shakes shall be laid with a side lap of not less than 1 1/2" between joints in adjacent courses). This is a fundamental practice, known by all experienced and ethical roofers, yet this company has done this type of repair work in Sacramento County for years.

The shims themselves are not as big as the minimum side lap requirement.

After a good cleaning, we re mortar using a special mixture with extra bonding agents, and add some "crown" to the top for better water run off.

 

 

 

 

 

Are your rain gutters embedded into the stucco?

 

This is something we see all of the time. If you cannot see space between the gutter and the wall, then they are embedded.

 

When houses are built, if the gutter guy happens to show up before the stucco guy, he will install the gutter end tight against the wood framing, then the stucco guy stuccos it in. Once the gutter is removed, you can see the gaping hole in the stucco. (below)

Frequently the gutter will overflow which leaks into the wall framing, or the gutter end develops a leak which then leaks into the wall framing.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The hole has been filled with new stucco, the gutter shortened and the gutter end is now separated from the wall. Problem solved.
